President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Kash Patel, a former advisor and Pentagon official, to be the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
This move would require current FBI director Christopher Wray to either step down or be fired, despite being appointed to a 10-year term in 2017 ¹.
Patel has been a loyal ally to Trump and has been critical of the FBI, supporting the notion of an anti-Trump "deep state" ¹ ². He has also written a book on the subject, titled "Government Gangster" ².
As a son of Indian immigrants, Patel has served in several high-level posts during Trump's first term, including as a National Security Advisor and as Chief of Staff to the acting Defence Secretary ¹ ². Trump has praised Patel's work, saying he "did an incredible job during my First Term" ¹.
If confirmed, Patel would work to "end the growing crime epidemic in America, dismantle the migrant criminal gangs, and stop the evil scourge of human and drug trafficking across the Border" ¹. However, his nomination is expected to face significant opposition, given his controversial views and lack of experience in law enforcement ¹ ².
