The Federal Government has made significant strides in rehabilitating federal roads

across the country, with a total of N92 billion spent on 74 roads in 24 states over the last four months. This effort is part of a larger initiative to address the critical state of road infrastructure in Nigeria, with the Ministry of Works seeking and receiving approval for the quick rehabilitation and intervention of 260 failed road projects in October 2023.

The government released N108.5 billion in January 2024 for emergency repairs, and the funds have been disbursed to various states, with some receiving more attention than others. For instance, Ebonyi has five road projects, while Borno has 10, and Lagos, Cross River, Edo, Yobe, and Taraba each have two. Other states like Enugu, Benue, and Abia have single road projects, while Osun has four, and Akwa Ibom, Katsina, Imo, and Oyo each have three.

Some notable road projects that received rehabilitation payments in August include the Mopa-Aiyetoro road in Kogi State, which got N1.2 billion, and the Ikot Nkon Itu-Mbanuso-Bende road section in Akwa Ibom State, which received N556 million. The Isoko/Aden River Bridge along Benin-Sagamu-Lagos Road also got N552 million, while the Baba-Pilka-Gwoza Road in Borno State received N638 million, and the Ibadan-Ife-Ilesa dual carriageway in Oyo/Osun States got N1 billion.

The Federal Government's efforts to improve road infrastructure are crucial, as federal roads carry over 80% of national vehicular and freight traffic, despite accounting for only 17% of the total national road network .
