Lakurawa Terrorists, Not Bandits Responsible For Zamfara Explosion — Police

The state's police commissioner says members of the dreaded group were seen around the scene of the incident shortly before the explosion.

The police have fingered newly formed terror group Lakurawa as the mastermind of an explosion that occurred along the Dansadau-Gusau Road in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Wednesday.

The Lakurawa group, a notorious insurgent organization, has been wreaking havoc in North-West Nigeria. After being dislodged by the Army in Sokoto and Kebbi, the surviving members were forced to flee and find new hideouts.

In a recent incident, the group planted a bomb under a bridge, which exploded and killed a motorist, injuring three others. According to Police Commissioner Muhammed Dalijan, this is a new tactic for the group, as they typically don't use explosive devices ¹.

The commissioner stated that the local bandits in Zamfara don't have the capacity to create or use bombs, which suggests that the Lakurawa group is responsible for the explosion.

Zamfara State has become a hotspot for banditry, with Governor Dauda Lawal describing it as the "hub of banditry" in Nigeria. The governor believes that with the right political will, the bandits can be eradicated within two weeks.

The military has vowed to eliminate the Lakurawa insurgents, as well as other terror groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.
